Abstract

A Phantom DH2+2 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed fromthe NOAA Ship McAurthurII (AR04-04) in an attempt to document the presence of critical hard bottom benthic habitats believedto exist in the waters of the Olympic Coast national marine sanctuary (OCNMS). Video data from specific dives falling withinthe bounds of the HMPR-113-2004-01d survey area were reviewed to examine the benthic characteristics as a tool for validatingsonar imagery.

Abstract:

A Phantom DH2+2 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed fromthe NOAA Ship McAurthurII (AR04-04) in an attempt to document the presence of critical hard bottom benthic habitats believedto exist in the waters of the Olympic Coast national marine sanctuary (OCNMS). Video data from specific dives falling withinthe bounds of the HMPR-113-2004-01d survey area were reviewed to examine the benthic characteristics as a tool for validatingsonar imagery.

Purpose:

The ROV survey was conducted to help address management questions of the OCNMS related to benthic communities, groundtruthprevious acoustic surveys, characterize the diversity, abundances, and health of living marine resources associated with hardbottom and soft bottom substrates, evaluate the fishing/harvest pressures on these critical habitats and their associated faunain areas of high and low fishing intensity, generate GIS-compatible data on critical habitats, and provide support to sanctuary-wide interests on the west coast to address such topics as conditions of critical habitats, and fishing/harvest impacts in theseareas.

Data Quality

Accuracy:

Unknown

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

Unknown. Positioning of the ROV was not precise due to less than optimal operation ofthe Trackpoint II positioning system. The position update frequency was something on the order of 6 times per minute.Evidently the navigation filter in Winfrog was set as such to not update until a "good" position was obtained. This resultedin duplicate positions being recorded in the nav file until an "updated good" position was sensed.

Completeness Report:

Unknown

Conceptual Consistency:

Not Tested

CC ID: 602069
Description:

Navigation information (along with time stamp) was extracted from digital overlay of video tapes recordedon Mini-DV media. A point file was created in ArcInfo 9.1 depicting the assumed position of the ROV. Position consideredto be assumed since the was USBL not operated appropriately. Video tapes were reviewed making note of primary and secondarysubstrate types, along with certain biological notations when deemed appropriate. Time stamp was noted on the video tapes ateach substrate transistion and assumed to remain constant until the next transistion in sediment type was encountered.Substrate type was entered into an Excel spreadsheet format where timestamp was used to correlate sediment with positionalinformation.,Metadata imported.
