Abstract: |
The Canadian ROPOS remotely operated vehicle (ROV) outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed fromthe NOAA Ship McAurthurII during May-June 2006 in an attempt to document the presence of critical hard bottom benthic habitats believedto exist in the waters of the Olympic Coast national marine sanctuary (OCNMS). Video data from specific dives falling withinthe bounds of the HMPR-119-2006-01a survey area were reviewed to describe various benthic characteristics as a tool for validating sonar imagery. |
Purpose: |
The ROV survey was conducted to help address OCNMS management questions related to benthic communities, groundtruthprevious acoustic surveys, characterize the diversity, abundances, and health of living marine resources associated with hardbottom and soft bottom substrates, evaluate the fishing/harvest pressures on these critical habitats and their associated faunain areas of high and low fishing intensity, generate GIS-compatible data on critical habitats, and provide support to sanctuary-wide interests on the west coast to address such topics as conditions of critical habitats, and fishing/harvest impacts in theseareas. |

Process Steps
Process Step 1
Description: |
The time stamp recorded to the video was recorded as Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), howeverthe navigation files were based on GMT. To make the records match, the navigation time stamp was adjustedto PDT (ie reduced by 7 hours) using Microsoft Excel. |
---|---|
Process Date/Time: | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 |
Process Step 2
Description: |
The navigation files contained positions recorded every 0.2 tenths of a second to accommodatethe high baud rate of the INS. The filter1D command in Generic Mapping Tools was used to reduce the datarecords to 1 second fixes. |
---|
Process Step 3
Description: |
A point file was then created in ArcInfo 9.1 which depicted the position of the ROV. |
---|
Process Step 4
Description: |
Video tapes were reviewed making note of primary and secondarysubstrate types, along with certain biological notations when deemed appropriate. Time stamp was noted on the video tapes ateach substrate transistion and assumed to remain constant until the next transistion in sediment type was encountered.Substrate type was entered into an Excel spreadsheet format where timestamp was used to correlate sediment with positionalinformation. |
