The Canadian ROPOS remotely operated vehicle (ROV) outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed from the NOAA Ship McAurthurII during May-June 2006 in an attempt to document the presence of critical hard bottom benthic habitats believed to exist in the waters of the Olympic Coast national marine sanctuary (OCNMS). Video data from specific dives falling within the bounds of the HMPR-119-2006-03b survey area were reviewed to describe various benthic characteristics as a tool for validating sonar imagery. Video mosaics were created from selected sections of video to assist with sonar image groundtruthing.


The ROV survey was conducted to help address OCNMS management questions related to benthic communities, groundtruth previous acoustic surveys, characterize the diversity, abundances, and health of living marine resources associated with hardbottom and soft bottom substrates, evaluate the fishing/harvest pressures on these critical habitats and their associated fauna in areas of high and low fishing intensity, generate GIS-compatible data on critical habitats, and provide support to sanctuary-wide interests on the west coast to address such topics as conditions of critical habitats, and fishing/harvest impacts in these areas. This arc file shows locations of segments of video data that were mosaiced into seamless images.

Using FinalCut Pro, clips of video were extracted from DVCAM into AVI containers using the DVPRO compression setting.

Virtual Dub was used to apply various color correcting filters, reduce the frame rate, and crop the video clips.

Using YRSoft CFRM-Movie (developed at the CCOM at the University of New Hampshire), sequential movie frames were co-registered to produce a log file for use in subsequently building the mosaic. Default parameters were used.

Using the rigid affine record (RRA) file produced from the previous step, Build-Mosaic was used to combine images stored as movie frames in a single mosaic on a basis of pair-wise transformations. This process produces a bitmap image.

Center points of the beginning and ending video frames were used to georegister the video mosaic by corresponding to navigation fixes using the time stamps imprinted on the video.
