These interferometric bathymetric data were collected with the Edgetech 6205 sonar system in the San Francisco Bay. Bathymetric and acoustic backscatter data were collected simultaneously in 84 survey blocks. Seventy five of these blocks were surveyed with 100% cover of backscatter imagery and nine blocks were surveyed with 50% backscatter coverage. These data were collected as source material for planned benthic habitat mapping. An earlier project had been completed to map the very-shallow subtidal and intertidal areas using optical methods.

Purpose: |
The primary purpose of this San Francisco Bay habitat mapping acquisition is to provide the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC), as required for the California Seafloor Mapping Program (CSMP) modern, accurately positioned sonar imagery data of San Francisco Bay coastal and near shore waters to delineate marine habitat types. Secondarily, the survey shall provide OPC and NOAA with bathymetric survey data from a combination of multi-beam and interferometric sonars. The interferometric bathymetry will not be as accurate as the bathymetry acquired with a multi-beam sonar. Thus, the areas with water depths greater than 20 meters, which shall be surveyed with a multi-beam system, are expected to have a higher order of accuracy. The combined survey data, including the imagery and the bathymetry, will support OPC's goals as well as assist with NOAA's mandate for port and harbor maintenance (dredging), coastal engineering (beach erosion and replenishment studies), and coastal zone management. |

Data Quality
Accuracy: |
These data are not attributed. |
---|---|
Horizontal Positional Accuracy: |
Interferometric horizontal positioning met IHO Order 1A specifications, meaning the horizontal accuracy of the data had to be within 5 meters + 5% of depth. The actual horizontal accuracy of the bathymetry exceeded these requirements, as the navigation/position data for the vessel was post-processed using an Applanix SmartBase post-processed kinematic solution, resulting in vessel horizontal positioning RMS values under 5 centimeters. Likewise, the vessel equipment offsets were measured to an accuracy of approximately 1 centimeter (1 sigma level) using a Total Station. Vessel roll and pitch were measured to an accuracy of approximately 0.02 degrees (1 sigma level) using an Applanix POS MV. These factors created highly accurate horizontal positioning of the data that exceeded IHO Order 1A standards. Overlapping features in the bathymetry were examined to confirm accuracy standards were met.; Quantitative Value: 1.0 meters, Test that produced the value: Approximated maximum horizontal uncertainty in meters |
Vertical Positional Accuracy: |
The Edgetech 6205 interferometric swath bathymetry were not expected to meet IHO Order 1a standards across the entire width of the survey swath. Instead, the QC crosslines were used to approximate the amount of swath that fell within IHO Order 1a standards. The crossline reports indicate that approximately the middle 50% of the swath achieved IHO Order 1a accuracy specifications. During acquisition, the interferometric lines were set to acquire data to 6 times water depth to each side of nadir, for a total of 12 times water depth. Thus, the crossline analysis indicates that approximately half, or a total of 3 times water depth to each side of nadir, achieved IHO Order 1a specifications. This analysis agrees with a manual review of the swath in the CARIS HIPS Subset Editor window.; Quantitative Value: 1.7 meters, Test that produced the value: Maximum Total Propagated Uncertainty in meters in outer beams |
Completeness Report: |
The data set was derived after manually rejecting erroneous soundings. The final bathymetric product was generated using a CUBE surface model of the cleaned bathymetry. |
Conceptual Consistency: |
Overlapping data sets were analyzed for agreement. Crossline analysis was performed to ensure IHO Order 1a standards were met at the 95% confidence level. Total propagation of uncertainty values was calculated in CARIS HIPS software to ensure standards were met or exceeded. |

Process Steps
Process Step 1
Description: |
Interferometric bathymetry data acquisition. These bathymetry data were acquired in JSF files using an Edgetech 6205. |
---|---|
Process Date/Time: | 2014-01-01 00:00:00 |
Process Step 2
Description: |
Interferometric bathymetry data processing. The bathymetry was processed in CARIS HIPS software to correct for post-processed navigation/positioning, tides, sound velocity, calibration values, and noise. After processing in CARIS HIPS, CUBE base surfaces in the CSAR file format were generated at a 1-meter bin size for each survey block. These CSAR surfaces were exported to BAG format, ESRI Grid format, and color-coded geo-tiff formats.
