Abstract

The Apalachicola Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and the NOAA Office for Coastal Management worked together to map benthic habitats within Apalachicola Bay, Florida. The bay and the lower portions of four distributaries were surveyed on 11-22 October 1999 using three benthic sampling techniques. This data set represents the sediment grain size and organic content information gathered from grab sampling. Grabs were collected at 136 stations throughout the bay.

Data Quality

Accuracy:

Values were checked against hard copy data sheets provided by the analysis laboratory. Total organic carbon analyses were repeated for samples where two subsamples differed by more than 10% (e.g., if sediment TOC was 1%, the replicate subsample must have a TOC between 0.9% and 1.1%).

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

Stations were located in the field using a differential Global Positioning System (GPS), and station coordinates, date and time of day were recorded upon arrival at each station.

Vertical Positional Accuracy:

Not relevant to the data set.

Completeness Report:

All grab data were not included in this data layer. Percent values of sand, silt, clay, gravel, and total organic content, as well as a Folk description of grain size and median grain size (in phi units) are included. Other calculated grain size metrics (such as mean grain size and percent skewness) were not included, but these data can be found in the Apalachicola Bay benthic database, available from the NOAA Office for Coastal Management.

Conceptual Consistency:

All data are believed to be logically consistent.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 611058
Description:

Grab samples were collected using a 0.04 square meter Shipek grab. Sediment grain size distributions (mean and median grain size, % size class) and total organic content (%) were measured in the laboratory from the sediment grabs. For grain size distribution, each sample was washed with deionized water, dried, and weighed. The coarse fraction was separated from the fine fraction (sand/silt) by sieving through U.S. Standard Sieve Mesh No. 230 (62.5 m). Sediment texture of the coarse fractions was determined at half-phi intervals by passing the sediment through nested sieves on a Ro-Tap apparatus. The weight of the material collected on each sieve was recorded. A Sedigraph 5,000 ET Particle Size Analyzer was used to analyze the fine fraction ( less than 62.5 m). Sediment texture descriptions followed the Wentworth classification as described in Folk (1974). Organic content was measured using a weight-loss-upon-ignition procedure. A longitudinal section comprising approximately one third of the sample volume was sliced from each frozen sample for analysis. These sections were dried in a 60 degrees Celsius oven for 2 to 3 days. Sections were then weighed and burned for 2 hours at 550 to 600 degrees Celsius in a muffle furnace. Sections were then cooled in a dessicator and weighed. Organic content was assumed to be the weight lost upon ignition and expressed as a percentage. Reference: Folk, R.L. 1974. Petrology of Sedimentary Rocks. Austin, Texas.
