Abstract

This data set represents the sediment profile imaging data from 2004 (79 stations). In Fall/Winter 2002, researchers from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and the NOAA Office for Coastal Management conducted a project to map benthic habitats by Catlett and Goodwin Islands on the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. Sediment grab samples were collected at 56 stations and sediment profile images were collected at 200 stations. Sampling areas were also surveyed using side scan sonar and interferometric swath bathymetry sensors. Scientists from the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences returned to sample a subset of the 2002 sediment grab data in 2003 and then again in 2004. A subset of SPI stations (79) were revisited in 2004.

Purpose:

VIMS and the NOAA Office for Coastal Management are using the acoustic, grab, and SPI information (collected in 2002, 2003, and 2004) to characterize benthic habitats by Catlett and Goodwin Islands on the York River. Sediment profile images (SPI) of the sediment-water interface were collected using a sediment profile camera at pre-determined locations at both sites.

Data Quality

Accuracy:

The attribute accuracy was verified by checking the compiled SPI database against the actual photos for each station. Since two photos were taken at each station, attributes from both images were noted in the database, and one image was digitized and analyzed using image analysis software. The results of this automated analysis were also used to check the accuracy of the dataset. When large disagreement occurred between images from a single station, all attributes were recorded and the image with the largest visible area was digitized.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

Stations were located in the field using a differential Global Positioning System (GPS), and station coordinates, date and time of day were recorded upon arrival at each station.

Vertical Positional Accuracy:

Not relevant to the data set.

Completeness Report:

All SPI data were included in this data layer.

Conceptual Consistency:

All data are believed to be logically consistent.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 615684
Description:

SPI images were collected on May 4, 2004 at a total of 79 stations. A Hulcher model sediment profile camera was deployed with a modified frame that was lightened for use from a small vessel. Fujichrome 100 ASA professional color slide film was used. Tests were done frequently onboard in order to ensure camera function and mark stations.Laboratory Methods: All sediment images were analyzed visually by projecting the images and recording all features seen into a preformatted standardized spreadsheet file. Images were then digitized using a Nikon LS2000 scanner and analyzed using the Adobe PhotoShop and NTIS Image programs. Steps in the computer analysis of each image were standardized and followed the basic procedures in Viles and Diaz (1991). Data from each image were sequentially saved to a spread sheet file for later analysis. Details of how these data were obtained can be found in Diaz and Schaffner (1988) and Rhoads and Germano (1986). References: 1) Viles, C. and R.J. Diaz. 1991. Process Step 2

CC ID: 615685
Description:

Data from field samples was entered into an Access database. A query was developed to review SPI data from all SPI stations. A shapefile was created using ESRI ArcMap 8.3.
