Abstract

Data was gathered by use of VIS and BGNIR UAV sensors. UAV flight altitude is at least 100m and covers an area of 0.91 km2. Data was collected between May 9, 2017 and May 11, 2017 from the Grand Bay NERR site in Mississippi, A 4-Band raster image then was produced after consolidating data.

Data was acquired by contract from NOAA to Quantum Spatial with a subcontract to PrecisionHawk. Specifications were for 4-band imagery at 3 cm resolution from an unmanned aerial system (UAS).

The collection area consists of four areas within the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and focus on the NOAA sentinel sites. This was part of a research project funded by a grant from the NOAA UAS Office to the NOAA Office for Coastal Management.

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

NOAA deployed a total of 21 12-inch by 24-inch targets visible in the imagery and surveyed them with RTK GPS to provide an independent source of higher accuracy.; Quantitative Value: 0.15 meters, Test that produced the value: Circular root mean square error in meters.

Completeness Report:

681 of 699 (97%) of images calibrated for RGB Output, while 662 out of 675 (98%) of images calibrated for BGNIR Output

Conceptual Consistency:

Survey represents best coverage of area of interest

Lineage

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1310714
Description:

Precision Hawk acquired aerial imagery over the Grand Bay site on May 9th 10th, and 11th, 2017. Imagery was acquired using the Zenmuse X5 digital camera manufactured by DJI, Inc., mounted on a Matrice 100 UAV platform. For the Grand Bay sites, images were collected in four spectral bands (red, green, blue, near-infrared). The acquisition flight parameters were designed to yield a native pixel resolution of 3 centimeters. 56 ground control points (GCPs) were used to control the imagery.

Process Date/Time: 2017-05-11 00:00:00

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1310715
Description:

1. Matching tie points and marking GCPs for geolocation using RayCloud,

2. Data stitching to generate orthomosaic and related products,

3. Resampling the RGB and BGNIR counterparts with the larger cell size for consistency,

4. Add the NIR band from the BGNIR output to the RGB output to produce a 4 band image,

5. QA/QC the output for excess areas, shifting and artifacts, and

6. QA/QC of the GCP accuracy by noting the distance of the shift from the markers and designated points.
