Community Social Vulnerability Indicies

An alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies administrative/legal and statistical geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data. These codes represent geographic identifiers for each community or U.S. Census Designtated Place (CDP) considered in this analysis. Number strings within the code provide specific and unique locator information at the national, state and individual community level for each entry.

An abridged numeric code that uniquely identifies geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data specific, in this analysis, to the U.S. West Coast. These codes represent geographic identifiers for each community or U.S. Census Designtated Place (CDP) considered in this analysis. Number strings within the code provide specific and unique locator information at the state and individual community level for each entry.

The unique geographically identifying name associated with the Census-Designated Place (CDP) for each entry.

Indicates the name of the U.S. county in which the Census Designated Place (CDP) in this field is located.

Indicates whether a community is within the boundaries of a Coastal County, as defined, for our purposes, as the list of NOAA Coastal Counties (https://www.census.gov/geo/landview/lv6help/coastal_cty.pdf), in addition to several counties in Washington and Oregon adjacent to the Columbia River. Value of 1 indicates it is within a coastal county value of 0 indicates it is not.

Indicates whether a community is within the boundaries of a NOAA designated Coastal County. Value of 1 indicates it is within a coastal county value of 0 indicates it is not. The list of NOAA coastal counties is provided here https://www.census.gov/geo/landview/lv6help/coastal_cty.pdf.

This index number represents a measure of personal disruption in the community, as indicated by a factor analysis applied to three U.S. census variables for this community: percent unemployed in the community, percent with no diploma in the community, and percent in poverty in poverity in the community.

This index number represents a measure of population composition in the community, as indicated by a factor analysis applied to four U.S. census variables for this community: percentage of community residents that identify as "white alone" in questions about racial identity, percentage of female headed households in the community, percentage of community residents with no diplom, and percentage of residents in poverty in the community.

This index number represents a measure of poverty in the community, as indicated by a factor analysis applied to four U.S. census variables for this community: percentage of community residents that receive income assistance, percentage of families below the poverty level in teh community, percentage of community residents over 65 years old who are in poverty, and percentage of community residents under 18 years old in the community.

This index number represents a measure of the labor force structure in the community, as indicated by a factor analysis applied to three U.S. census variables for this community: percentage of community resident households that receive social security, percentage of community residents aged 16 and over than are in the civilian labor force, and the percentage of female community residents over 16 years of age who are employed.

This index number represents a measure of the housing characteristics in the community, as indicated by a factor analysis applied to four U.S. census variables for this community: median monthly mortgage costs in the community, median gross rent in the community, median number of rooms in the community, and the percentage of housing units that are mobile homes.

This index number represents a measure of the natural resource labor force structure in the community, as indicated by a factor analysis applied to two U.S. census variables for this community: percentage of community residents employed in farming, fishing and forestry occupations, and the percentage employed in agriculture, forestry, fishing, hunting and mining industries.

This index number represents a measure of the wealth and education in the community, as indicated by a factor analysis applied to four U.S. census variables for this community: percentage of households in the community with incomes over $200,000, median home values in the community, percentage of community residents with bachelor's degrees and the mean retirement income in the community.

This number remembers a composite measure of social vulnerability for each community, provided by combing all prior community level indices including the personal disruption, population composition, povery, laborreversed, housingcharareversed, natreslaborforcereversed and wealtheducationreversed indices.

This represents a category level of social vulnerability, either high, moderate or low, based on upon newcomposite_score results for each community.
