Summary

Description

This project documents traditional knowledge (fishing techniques, stories, social networks, etc.), changes in fishing conditions over time (adaptations to management, climate change, etc.), and fishing traditions (practice and culture) for the Hawaii bottomfish fishery. This information was collected via semi-structured interviews and participant observation with fishermen across multiple generations. Effort to document the bottomfish “family tree”, traditional knowledge, techniques, adaptations, culture and traditions will improve our understanding of changes in the fishery over time and provide valuable insights. These could allow for consideration of traditional values in future management programs, improve our interpretation of historical data, and ensure sustainable management for the future. More importantly, this effort can ensure that fishing legacies live on so that future generations in Hawaii are aware of their traditional connections to the bottomfish fishery, to marine resources, and can take pride in their cultural heritage.
