This data set contains vector polygons depicting locations for critical habitats and essential habitats, and vector points depicting locations for artificial reefs, recreational fishing, repeated measurement sites, water intakes, and fishery areas in North Carolina. Location-specific type and source information are stored in associated data tables (described below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer.

This data set is a portion of the ESI data for North Carolina. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. 2016-11-01 00:00:00 - The main sources of data used to depict human-use resources for this data layer were publicly-available digital data supplemented with expert knowledge. The RESOURCE MANAGEMENT polygons include Designated Critical Habitats mapped for the piping plover, North Atlantic right whale, and loggerhead sea turtle. Data were provided by the USFWS and NOAA NMFS. Also mapped as polygons are Habitat Areas of Particular Concern (HAPCs) and/or Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) necessary to support the key life stages of snapper/grouper, dolphin/wahoo, coastal migratory pelagic, shrimp, spiny lobster and coral. These boundaries were provided as part of a collaborative effort of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, and the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council. Mapped as points, Artificial reef data were provided by N.C. Division of Natural Resources (NCDNR). Fishery area locations represent oyster sanctuaries in which fishing methods are regulated. Locational information was obtained from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries (NCDMF). Locations of recreational fishing piers were mapped using information found at Fishing-NC.com and from the N.C. Geographical Response Plan. Repeated measurement sites represent NOAA national data buoy locations (DB), NOAA Mussel Watch monitoring sites (MWS) and NOAA National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON). Locations of water intakes were obtained from the N.C. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (NCDENR) \x96 Division of Water Quality.
