Abstract

A series of dives were conducted from 1998 to 2003 through out the Hawaiian Archipelago using the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory's ROV RCV-150 and submersibles Pisces IV and Pisces V. The dives were focused on surveying subphotic fish assemblages (300-500 m) in relation to patches of deep corals and relative to regional differences in oceanic productivity.

Item Identification

Title: EOP Fish and coral surveys using submersible and ROV dives in the Hawaiian Archipelago
Status: Completed
Abstract:

A series of dives were conducted from 1998 to 2003 through out the Hawaiian Archipelago using the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory's ROV RCV-150 and submersibles Pisces IV and Pisces V. The dives were focused on surveying subphotic fish assemblages (300-500 m) in relation to patches of deep corals and relative to regional differences in oceanic productivity.

Purpose:

The University of Hawaii HURL assets were used to conduct two studies. First was and evaluation of fish association with precious corals which are the subject of commercial harvest. Second was to look for patterns in the biomass of the fish assemblages relative to regional differences in oceanic productivty.

Access Information

Security Class: Unclassified
Data Access Procedure:

Legacy data set.

Send written request to Frank Parrish (Frank.Parrish@noaa.gov)

Data Access Constraints:

Not applicable

Data Quality

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Habitat code varied between survey years so columns were included that preserved the original habitat codes and new column that consolidated them for analysis.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: No
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: None
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: No
Is Access to the Data Limited Based on an Approved Waiver?: No
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Dissemination: Legacy data set
If Delay is Longer than Latency of Automated Processing, Indicate Under What Authority Data Access is Delayed:

Data was published within a year of completion of data collection.

All raw video data was available through Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) one year after collection.

Tabular data required time for processing with no allocated funds for analysis.

Actual or Planned Long-Term Data Archive Location: To Be Determined
If To Be Determined, Unable to Archive, or No Archiving Intended, Explain:

Legacy data set is stored in tabular form at PIFSC.

Raw video archived at Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL)

Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: Raw video was archived by Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) within a year. Tabular data archived within a year after analysis was complete.
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

Saved in multiple places at PIFSC.

On CD.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

1) Raw video were reviewed

2) Fish, coral, habitat variables were documented using 5 minute survey segments as the sub or ROV was traveling.

3) Estimated fish lengths were used with research catch length weight statistics to generate weight estimates.
