Title: Hawaii DAR Fisherman Reporting System Data (Catch)
Status: In Work
Abstract:

This data set contains the catch data from fishers who take marine life for commercial purposes and report their catch, effort, and sales on a commercial catch report form to the State of Hawaii. The fishing area extends from the Main Hawaiian Islands to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, with fishing also taking place on the high seas and around the Pacific Remote Island Areas (PRIA) and Kiribati (150o W - 179o E and 30o N - 0o N).

These self-reported forms have been collected since 1948. In October 2002, new reporting forms were implemented as a result the Commercial Catch Report Revision Project, and a new database was developed for the data collected on these forms.

Purpose:

DAR collects data from fishers who are required to report their fisheries effort, catch, and sales (sales data are no longer collected after September 2002) on a commercial catch report form. These data have been collected, compiled, and archived continuously since 1948 and are used extensively by DAR and authorized fisheries management agencies for monitoring fisheries and assessing the health of resources. They are especially valuable because they are such a long time-series and thus provide a good source for analyzing trends. Fishery managers depend on this data to manage fisheries for long-term health.

Description

The fishing area around Hawaii can be variable and has changed in the over 50 years that the reporting has been in place. Fishing area includes Main Hawaiian Islands, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, high seas, the Pacific Remote Island Areas (PRIA), and out to Kiribati.

Extent Group 1 / Time Frame 1

CC ID: 42518
Time Frame Type: Continuing
Start: 1948
Description:

These self reported forms have been collected since at least 1948, and have been revised continually, adding areas, fishing methods, ports of landing and species codes. On October 1, 2002 new reporting forms were implemented providing more detailed species and effort data and eliminating sales data (October 1, 2002), after dealer reporting was implemented.
