Summary

Abstract

This table contains processed location data for 30 juvenile Steller sea lions in the central/eastern Aleutian Islands, Alaska, during 2000-2002. Data for the satellite depth recorders (Wildlife Computers, Redmond, WA, USA) were obtained through Service Argos (http://www.argos-system.org/). Data (including DS and DIAG files) either were decoded at the MML (AFSC, NMFS, NOAA) using SATPAK or DAP software (Wildlife Computers). All data were filtered using methods of McConnell et al. (1992) with a maximum transit rate of 2 m/s after deleting duplicate and “Z” locations, using the R package Argosfilter (0.63; Freitas 2012). See http://127.0.0.1:24491/library/argosfilter/html/vmask.html for a full description.

Entity Information

Entity Type
Data Table

Data Attribute / Type Description
ptt
integer
The Argos decimal PTT (platform transmitter terminal) assigned to the instrument of a given animal.
dbid
character
Database ID; the unique identification number (UID; or name) assigned to each study animal. Numeral dbids are associated with the Alaska Ecosystems Program’s (https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/tags/alaska-ecosystems-program) Telemetry Database
region
character
Area describing larger metapopulation groupings of Steller sea lion complexes and sites. This is the region where the sea lion was captured and tagged, not of each Argos position fix. Regions are commonly referred to in MML data products and manuscripts, and in NMFS policy and management documents. Steller sea lion metapopulation structure in Alaska is described by: York AE, Merrick RL, and Loughlin TR (1996). An analysis of the Steller sea lion metapopulation in Alaska. In: Metapopulations and Wildlife Conservation, Island Press, Washington DC 259-292. Detailed information is available at the NOAA/NCEI website: Steller sea lion haulout and rookery locations in the United States for 2016-05-14 (NCEI Accession 0129877). For this dataset the abbreviations are: CAI: central Aleutian Islands EAI: eastern Aleutian Islands CGA: central Gulf of Alaska
sitename
character
A descriptive name specific to the site (location) of animal capture for instrumentation. All capital letters, corresponds to sitenames listed in the "Site Description" table of the Alaska Ecosystems Program’s Steller sea lion database with geographic coordinates found at NCEI Accession 0129877.The "SITENAME" is consistent among the MML’s data products and publications.
age_class
character
General age class of sea lion
sex
character
Sex of sea lion
instr
character
Satellite transmitter instrument model deployed on corresponding animal.
property
string
Institution holding tag ownership
datetime
string
The Argos Date and Time of receipt of the associated data. Time is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is equivalent to UTC.
lq
character
Location Quality; Designates the location quality (measurement of accuracy) associated with a corresponding position calculated by Service Argos (see: http://www.argos-system.org/manual/3-location/34_location_classes.htm) for a full description.
latitude
decimal
Argos calculated latitude of associated ptt location (decimal degree).
longitude
decimal
Argos calculated longitude of associated ptt location (decimal degree).
wetdry
integer
Transmitter status at time of transmission whether wet (0) or dry (1); these values are reversed from typical instrument software output.
comments
string
Comment regarding disparity of dbid numbers between this dataset and that published by Fadely et al. (2005).
