Abstract

After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, federal and state agencies came together to form the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment Trustee Council. The Council studied the effects of the oil spill and continues to pursue projects intended to restore the Gulf of Mexico to the condition it would have been in if the spill had not happened. The Trustee Implementation Groups will develop restoration projects and plans to accomplish the significant work needed for the Gulf. Development of these projects is guided by the programmatic restoration plan finalized in 2016 as part of a legal settlement with BP for up to $8.8 billion.

Title: Mississippi Artificial Reef Habitat Project (Project ID: 7)
Status: Completed
Creation Date: 2020
Abstract:

Purpose:

The Mississippi Artificial Reef Habitat project deployed 29,000 cubic yards of cultch material (limestone) on 47 nearshore artificial reefs in the marine waters of Mississippi. This project provided valuable habitat for small crustaceans and mollusks, as well as juvenile shrimp, crab and oysters by restoring nearshore artificial reefs. A final close-out report, which includes a map of the restored artificial reefs, has been completed and is available under the Documents Section.

Restoration Objectives:

1) Create or enhance existing nearshore artificial reefs that are sustained for the expected lifespan of the project; 2) Promote habitat utilization of reefs by mobile and sessile invertebrate infauna and epifauna
