Title: | Electronic Monitoring in the Pacific Islands Longline Fisheries Data |
---|---|
Short Name: | PI EM Data |
Status: | On Going |
Creation Date: | 2017 |
Abstract: |
Electronic monitoring (EM) data are collected aboard Hawaii longline vessels (shallow- and deep-set) participating in a pre-implementation voluntary program. These data include video collected during hauling of fishing gear and sensor data collected throughout the fishing trip. Selected EM trips are reviewed for the detection of catch and bycatch species with identification performed to species or species groups. |
Purpose: |
To determine the efficacy of EM in the Hawaii and American Samoa longline fisheries as a monitoring tool. |

Data Quality
Representativeness: |
EM data for review are selected from shallow- or deep-set longline trips from vessels participating in the voluntary program. |
---|---|
Bias: |
Discarded catch may remain undetected if caught and released outside the camera field of view (e.g. sharks and seabirds). Handling methods may vary between fishing crews and vessels and may result in variability in detection, especially for discarded catch. In addition, video review speed and reviewer attention or experience may bias the detection and/or identification of retained or discarded catch. |
Comparability: |
Species detections and identifications are comparable to fisheries observer data for retained catch. However, EM currently underreports discarded catch compared to fisheries observer data. A catch handling study will begin in 2021 to improve discard detection with EM. |
