Abstract:

The Hawai'i Pelagic Fisheries Market Analysis uses existing landings and trade data to investigate recent market trends for commercially landed pelagic and highly migratory species in Hawai'i from 2008 to 2019, focusing on Pacific Island pelagic management unit species (PMUS). This report analyzes Hawai'i landings and trade of PMUS. It then details landings, trade, and local and domestic consumption of bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna, and swordfish.
Purpose:

This report serves to summarize and analyze recent pelagic fisheries market trends, and establishes a baseline to compare against subsequent years. It also discusses Hawai'i contribution to U.S. seafood supply and the economic impact of Hawai'i pelagic fisheries.

All data sets used in this report are publicly available. Details of the data sources and data query instructions can be found in the report's Data section and Appendix B. Code used to complete the data analyses were written and executed in R Studio using the R coding language, and a copy can be found on the report's GitHub site: https://github.com/CrystalDombrow-NOAA/Hawaii-Pelagic-Fisheries-Market-Analysis
