Title: Indicators 20220516

Publication Date: 2022-05-16
Abstract:

These files contain the key distribution metrics of center of gravity, range limits, and depth for each species in the portal. This data set covers 7 regions of the United States: Northeast, Southeast, Gulf of Mexico, West Coast, Eastern Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska.

Purpose:

These data were created as part of the DisMAP project to enable visualization and analysis of changes in fish and invertebrate distributions. This table provides the key metrics used to evaluate a species distribution shift. Information on species distributions is of paramount importance for understanding and preparing for climate-change impacts, and plays a key role in climate-ready fisheries management.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1173809
Description:

The data was downloaded from the above sources as raw bottom trawl survey data. Please refer to the original source for detailed metadata information on each trawl survey.

Process Date/Time: 2022-03-07 00:00:00
Process Contact: NMFS Office of Science and Technology (OST)
Phone (Voice): 301-427-8100

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1173810
Description:

The raw survey data was then processed using an R script, which combined the individual files collected for each regional survey into one dataset with standardized names and units across all regions, and removing unnecessary columns. During this processing step, decisions where made to in some cases trim a regions data to either eliminate certain years or strata based on evaluation of survey coverage for those years or strata.

Process Contact: NMFS Office of Science and Technology (OST)
Phone (Voice): 301-427-8100

Process Step 3

CC ID: 1173811
Description:

The processed data was then fed into a Python script to generate the interpolated biomass distribution maps. These maps were then uploaded to the NOAA Geoplatform as ESRI Imagery mosaic layers for display on DisMAP.

Process Date/Time: 2022-05-16 00:00:00
Process Contact: NMFS Office of Science and Technology (OST)
Phone (Voice): 301-427-8100

Process Step 4

CC ID: 1173812
Description:

Key metrics used to evaluate a species distribution (center of gravity latitude, average depth, range limits) are then calculated using a Python script using the interpolated biomass layers for each species for all years.
