Summary

Description

The Master Field Log (MFL) is a binder maintained for each island and year containing non-survey data forms and summary information collected over the course of field seasons since 1982. Information in the MFL includes the field itinerary, specimen collection forms, bleach and tag records, interatoll movement, reproduction, molting, survival factors, deaths/disappearances, necropsy reports, and narratives. Most MFL information is entered into various data files (ex., into the specimen, survival factor, or MasterID data) but some information is not computerized (ex., the itinerary and narratives) or can be found in greater detail in the MFL.

Title: HMSRP Hawaiian Monk Seal Master Field Logs
Status: In Work
Abstract:

The Master Field Log (MFL) is a binder maintained for each island and year containing non-survey data forms and summary information collected over the course of field seasons since 1982. Information in the MFL includes the field itinerary, specimen collection forms, bleach and tag records, interatoll movement, reproduction, molting, survival factors, deaths/disappearances, necropsy reports, and narratives. Most MFL information is entered into various data files (ex., into the specimen, survival factor, or MasterID data) but some information is not computerized (ex., the itinerary and narratives) or can be found in greater detail in the MFL.

Purpose:

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is the lead agency responsible for the recovery of the Hawaiian monk seal. Each year the NMFS Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, Protected Species Division, Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program conducts studies at the main breeding sites to provide information necessary to evaluate (1) the status and trends of the monk seal subpopulations, (2) natural history traits such as survival, reproduction, growth, behavior, and feeding habits, and (3) the success of various activities designed to facilitate population growth. The Master Field Log (MFL) is a binder containing non-survey data forms and summary information collected over the course of each field season.
