Summary

Description

This data set contains all in house and clinical/research laboratory results for all Hawaiian monk seals sampled for epidemiological studies since 1997. Biomedical specimens are collected either for special health studies or opportunistically during other studies where monk seals require sedation (e.g., attachment of satellite telemetry instruments, critter cams). Results include serology, biochemistry, parasitology, virology, and toxicology from various laboratories. Original lab results and field data sheets are housed at the PIFSC Kewalo Research Facility Veterinary Laboratory.

Title: HMSRP Hawaiian Monk Seal Biomedical Data/Laboratory Results
Status: In Work
Abstract:

This data set contains all in house and clinical/research laboratory results for all Hawaiian monk seals sampled for epidemiological studies since 1997. Biomedical specimens are collected either for special health studies or opportunistically during other studies where monk seals require sedation (e.g., attachment of satellite telemetry instruments, critter cams). Results include serology, biochemistry, parasitology, virology, and toxicology from various laboratories. Original lab results and field data sheets are housed at the PIFSC Kewalo Research Facility Veterinary Laboratory.

Purpose:

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is the lead agency responsible for the recovery of the Hawaiian monk seal. The NMFS Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, Protected Species Division, Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program conducts ongoing health studies at the main breeding sites and in the Main Hawaiian Islands to provide information necessary to evaluate baseline health status and how disease may play a role in the recovery of the species. Biomedical data is collected from live animals either during special health studies or opportunistically with other special studies or during disentanglements and translocations.
