Title: Sightings of marked Alaska Steller sea lions throughout their range, 1987-2014
Short Name: AFSC/NMML: Sightings of marked Alaska Steller sea lions throughout their range, 1987-2014
Status: In Work
Publication Date: 2019-05-28
Abstract:

This dataset contains information regarding the sighting and capture of Steller sea lions marked in Alaska from 1987 to 2014. Marks are seen and documented in a variety of ways; remote cameras, dedicated vessel- and land-based surveys, recaptures of Steller sea lions, aerial survey photographs, strandings, and opportunistic sightings sent in from the public.

Purpose:

The primary purpose of this dataset is to estimate vital rates, survival and fecundity of permanently marked Steller sea lions.

Technical Environment

Description:

Sighting data are recorded on paper forms in the field, then entered into Microsoft Excel files then transferred, or entered directly into Microsoft Access. A MS Access query generates the comma-delimited file.

Data Quality

Completeness Report:

Not applicable.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Observational records are compared among observers and against current and previously-collected images to ensure accuracy. Sightings since the year 2000 have been edit checked to original field notes. That data is then compared between observers, if more than one, and compared to any photos that may have been taken at the time of sighting.
