Small boat surveys are conducted in the waters surrounding the islands and atolls of the Palmyra EEZ. |
| Purpose: |
Data collected during small-boat surveys are used for population studies. Photos are used for individual photo-identification to anaylze movements, social structure, and abundance. Biopsy samples are used for genetic analysis and population structure, contaminant and stable isotope analyses. Acoustic data are used for studies on the regional differences/similarities in stocks. |

Small-boat surveys were conducted in the waters surrounding Palmyra Atoll in collaboration with Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). Species identifications and group size estimates were collected. Photographs, biopsy samples, and acoustic recordings were collected for some species when possible. A total of 68 cetacean sightings were made including 3 beaked whale (Mesoplodon sp.), 55 bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), 8 spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris), 1 short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), and 1 unidentified cetacean (most likely a beaked whale due to large, single animal with large footprint) encounters. In addition, a HARP was recovered and redeployed. Acoustic recording data are managed by SIO. |
