Description

Cetacean surveys are conducted aboard small vessels (19-41 ft) in order to collect photos, biopsy samples, and acoustic recordings. Surveys are conducted with three to eight observers scanning 360 degrees around the vessel using unaided eye or 7-10x binoculars.

Abstract:

Cetacean surveys are conducted aboard small vessels (19-41 ft) in order to collect photos, biopsy samples, and acoustic recordings. Surveys are conducted with three to eight observers scanning 360 degrees around the vessel using unaided eye or 7-10x binoculars.
Purpose:

Data collected during small-boat surveys are used for population studies. Photos are used for individual photo-identification to anaylze movements, social structure, and abundance. Biopsy samples are used for genetic analysis and population structure, contaminant and stable isotope analyses. Acoustic data are used for studies on the regional differences/similarities in stocks.
