Item Identification

Title: Observer Logistics (OBSLOG) - Observer Program Operations and Analysis
Short Name: Observer Information (Non-Catch Share fishery bycatch analysis and reporting)
Status: In Work
Creation Date: 2001-08-15
Abstract:

NWFSC Observer programs are the most comprehensive fishery dependent data collection system for total mortality estimation, protected species monitoring and discard data for stock assessments. Observer data is also used to track quotas in-season for the catch share IFQ fishery. The numerous observer program total mortality and bycatch reports are used by agency and council staff for management of federal and state fisheries on the west coast of the US. Observer program bycatch reports, data collection and research activities are also used to manage ESA listed species and fulfill Biological Opinion obligations.

Information on observers, such as deployment history, address, phone, email, emergency contacts, pictures and material that supports them meeting required standards (transcripts, statement of criminal history).

Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: 365
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

The Northwest Fisheries Science Center facilitates backup and recovery of all data and IT components which are managed by IT Operations through the capture of static (point-in-time) backup data to physical media. Once data is captured to physical media (every 1-3 days), a duplicate is made and routinely (weekly) transported to an offsite archive facility where it is maintained throughout the data's applicable life-cycle.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

Observers capture fisheries discard data by observing discards while on applicable vessels
