Short Name: | AFSC/REFM: Atka mackerel Tagging Studies, Aleutian Islands, Alaska |
Status: | In Work |
Abstract: |
From 1999-2015, approximately 130,000 Atka mackerel have been tagged and released in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, specifically at Seguam Pass, Tanaga Pass, Amchitka Island, Kiska Island, Petrel Bank, Buldir Island, Agattu Island and Western Aleutian Seamounts. To date, over 2,600 have been recovered. Tag releases were conducted aboard the chartered fishing vessels, Pacific Explorer and Morning star (2014), and tag recoveries were conducted aboard the chartered fishing vessel, Seafisher. In addition, the Atka mackerel fishery provides a substantial amount of the tag recoveries in the areas open to fishing. Tagging procedures and recovery sampling are described in detail in McDermott et al 2005. |
Purpose: |
The goal of this project is to use tagging methods to estimate local abundance and small scale movement of Atka mackerel around Steller sea lion rookeries and to examine potential fishery effects on Atka mackerel movement and abundance. |

Data Quality
Completeness Report: |
No locations are given for tags recovered by NMFS North Pacific observers during fishing operations; this is due to the confidentiality of the data. The Atka mackerel tagging model requires fishery information on where/when the fishery occurs and how much Atka mackerel was captured during each fishing season. This data is NOT shown in the database as it is confidential and queried from the NMFS FMA Progarm in Seattle, Washington. This data is needed to estimate Atka mackerel abundance and exploitation rates using the tagging model. |
---|---|
Conceptual Consistency: |
All data tables were cross checked with original data sheets, checked for outlying data points and corrected, internal condistency checks, duplicate record checks using MS Access queries within the database. The tables are not relational; they all share commonalities. Also, ESRI ArcGIS was often used to check for haul location correctness, to assign areas and stratums to fishery data. |
