California Harpoon Logbook Data

This data set contains the catch, effort, and bycatch information recorded in the vessel logbook.

Logbook data submission is mandatory under CDFW regulations and since the 2005 implementation of the HMS fisheries management plan. The data are used to monitor the fishery and contribute to stock assessments.

Logbooks are edited and keypunched by SWFSC and CDFW staff into a database housed at SWFSC. Comparisons of landings and logbooks collected indicate that some logbooks are missing in some years. The data set has been migrated from dbase files to an Access database and as of Decenber 2015 are in the process of being migrated to an Oracle database.
