Species Information System (SIS)

The Species Information System (SIS) is developed and managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Office of Science and Technology to provide NMFS scientists, resource managers, and policy coordinators with applications for data entry, retrieval, and report generation. SIS acts as a central repository to collect and manage regional and national data across NMFS program offices. SIS includes database, a web-enabled user interface for data entry and reporting, as well as a Public Portal website reporting SIS data to stakeholders and the interested public in user-friendly, database-generated displays.

The data housed within SIS includes the most up-to-date information on stock assessment results, the status of managed stocks, annual catch limit (ACL) tracking, and other related fisheries management information, as well as a growing collection of historical records. This information is necessary to support services NMFS provides to fisheries conservation and management efforts, as mandated by the Magnuson-Stevens Act. SIS directly supports a number of agency reporting requirements, including the Office of Sustainable Fisheries' Annual Report to Congress on the Status of U.S. Fisheries and NMFS performance metrics.

This metadata record is intended to document the current Data Set for the parent system, including system Entities (i.e. database tables) and Attributes (i.e. database columns) presented as children records.

As the system continues to evolve, each production release will have a separate metadata record under the parent system record. However, the Data Set, Entity, and Attribute metadata in this record will be updated so that this record is always current.
