Summary
The current data model is antiquated and does not adequately accommodate current protocols and reporting requirements for fisheries data being managed at SWFSC. Due to the design of current applications and stored procedures, any change to a database object can potentially disable other objects and crash applications that point to the those database objects.

Status: | In Work |
Abstract: |
The current data model is antiquated and does not adequately accommodate current protocols and reporting requirements for fisheries data being managed at SWFSC. Due to the design of current applications and stored procedures, any change to a database object can potentially disable other objects and crash applications that point to the those database objects. |
Purpose: |
Update the database design to support reporting needs and data management capabilities. |
Supplemental Information: |
Changes are needed to the relationships, constraints and design of database structures. The current design limits any possible changes due to foreign key and other constraints on database objects. Lack of sufficient validation coupled with outdated table designs and limited constraints has led to poor data quality and artificially introduced data errors into the HMS fisheries data in the SWHMS database. Duplicate entries are easily introduced, insufficient hierarchies in reference data make summarizations difficult. |
