The SIS database is developed and managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Office of Science and Technology to provide NMFS scientists, resource managers, and policy coordinators with applications for data entry, retrieval, and report generation. SIS acts as a central repository to collect and manage regional and national data across NMFS program offices. In addition to the database, SIS also includes a web-enabled user interface for data entry and reporting, as well as a Public Portal website reporting SIS data to stakeholders and the interested public in user-friendly, database-generated displays. |
| Purpose: |
The data housed within SIS includes the most up-to-date information on stock assessment results, the status of managed stocks, and other related fisheries management information, as well as a growing collection of historical records. This information is necessary to support services NMFS provides to fisheries conservation and management efforts, as mandated by the Magnuson-Stevens Act. SIS directly supports a number of agency reporting requirements, including the Office of Sustainable Fisheries' Annual Report to Congress on the Status of U.S. Fisheries and NMFS performance metrics. |
