Abstract

Calibrated midwater and bottom backscatter data collected continuously with ES-60 echosounders throughout the bottom trawlsurvey period, continuing a time series of such data begun in 2005. Raw acoustic data was logged continuously 24 hours/day for each of the four legs of the cruise. The data is stored as raw files on the AFSC network drive.

Item Identification

Title: AFSC/RACE/GAP/vonSzalay: The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Gulf of Alaska, and Aleutian Islands Simrad ES 60 Acoustic Data Collected on Bottom Trawl Surveys
Short Name: AFSC/RACE/GAP/vonSzalay: The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Gulf of Alaska, and Aleutian Islands Simrad ES 60 Acoustic Data Collected on Bottom Trawl Surveys
Status: In Work
Abstract:

Calibrated midwater and bottom backscatter data collected continuously with ES-60 echosounders throughout the bottom trawlsurvey period, continuing a time series of such data begun in 2005. Raw acoustic data was logged continuously 24 hours/day for each of the four legs of the cruise. The data is stored as raw files on the AFSC network drive.

Purpose:

Acoustic data collection in conjunction with bottom trawling operations allows us to address several difficulties in obtaining representative trawl samples such as: searches for trawlable location over untrawlable ground, seafloor characterization at abandoned stations, mapping seafloor areas without adequate NOS charting, and quantifying schools of off-bottom fish.
