Abstract

The standardized NEFSC Winter Bottom Trawl Survey was initiated in 1992 and covered offshore areas from the Mid-Atlantic to Georges Bank. Inshore strata were covered from 1992-2007 but were later dropped, as few flatfish of interest were captured. Deep strata (183-366 m) were not covered consistently until 1998.

Abstract:

The standardized NEFSC Winter Bottom Trawl Survey was initiated in 1992 and covered offshore areas from the Mid-Atlantic to Georges Bank. Inshore strata were covered from 1992-2007 but were later dropped, as few flatfish of interest were captured. Deep strata (183-366 m) were not covered consistently until 1998.

Purpose:

The winter survey mission was to address the perceived low catchability of flatfish in the spring and autumn surveys. In 2007, the survey ended when it became clear that the new vessel and gear would capture flatfish adequately.

Data Quality

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

SCS and FSCS data collection software programs employ real-time validation and must meet database integrity constraints. Prior to FSCS data collection, paper logs were pre-audited prior to keypunching. Data are then subject to post-audits.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: Yes
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: Unknown
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: Yes
Is Access to the Data Limited Based on an Approved Waiver?: No
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Dissemination: N/A
If Delay is Longer than Latency of Automated Processing, Indicate Under What Authority Data Access is Delayed:

Data is no longer collected for this data set.

Actual or Planned Long-Term Data Archive Location: To Be Determined
If To Be Determined, Unable to Archive, or No Archiving Intended, Explain:

Archiving solution for Oracle Data Sets is yet to be determined.

Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: N/A
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

Archival of source data preserving unaltered collected data, Scheduled backups, Remote storage backups, Password protection.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

Vessel sensor data were collected electronically using SCS. Station, catch and biological data were collected manually using paper logs until 2001. At the completion of each cruise leg, the logs were keypunched and data audited extensively prior to being released.

Starting with year 2002, FSCS 1.0 was implemented to electronically capture station, catch and biological data. Data were subject to extensive audits prior to being released.

Author: Nancy McHugh
Question:

What type of trawl gear was implemented during the winter flatfish survey from 1992-1997?

Answer:

A modified Yankee #36 trawl, fitted with a chain sweep covered by rubber disks and 30 fathom ground cables designed to be more efficient in monitoring flounders was implemented during the 1992-1997 winter flatfish surveys.
