Abstract

The "Twin-Trawl Sweep Efficiency Study" was intended to compare the sweep efficiency and selectivity of the NEFSC standardized bottom trawl to that of a standardized trawl that differed only in sweep configuration. The experimental trawl was equipped with a small cookie sweep while the standardized trawl has a larger rock-hopper sweep. This work was done on a commercial twin-trawler that was capable of towing both nets side-by-side simultaneously. This work was undertaken in Southern New England waters in depths (30-50 meters) assumed to have high flounder and skate densities. Ninety two valid paired tows were accomplished. Efficiency and size selectivity for the two configurations were compared.
