Abstract

The "Southern New England Yellowtail Flounder Industry-Based Survey" was a collaboration between the Rhode Island Division of Fish and Wildlife and the fishing industry, with support from NOAA Fisheries. The goal of the survey was to assess the temporal and spatial abundance and size composition of yellowtail flounder (and associated species) within the Nantucket Lightship Closed Area, other proposed closure areas, and adjacent open areas. These high density observations were also intended to compliment the NOAA/NEFSC standardized bottom trawl surveys. Intensive sampling in Southern New England waters was accomplished using two commercial vessels equipped with industry designed yellowtail flounder trawls. Sampling protocols were adapted from the NEFSC standardized bottom trawl surveys.
