To study the effects of ocean acidification we examined the effects of ocean acidification on the embryo stages of the economically important southern Tanner crab, Chionoecetes bairdi.
Ovigerous females were reared in one of 3 treatments: control (ambient pH ~8.1), pH 7.8, and pH 7.5 for 2 years. Embryos in year 1 were from oocytes developed in the field whereas embryos in
year 2 were from oocytes developed under acidified conditions. Datasets associated with this study include Brooding Duration, Carbonate Chemistry, Embryo Morphology, and Embryo Stages. Embryo
stages assessed monthly included detailed developmental stages from the prefuniculus formation through the prehatching stage. Embryo stages were not different among pH treatments. Embryo
morphology included egg area, egg diameter, yolk area, yolk diameter, embryo area, eye area, and eye diameter. Each morphological characteristic varied according to pH treatment using a principal
component analysis.

Abstract: |
To study the effects of ocean acidification we examined the effects of ocean acidification on the embryo stages of the economically important southern Tanner crab, Chionoecetes bairdi. Ovigerous females were reared in one of 3 treatments: control (ambient pH ~8.1), pH 7.8, and pH 7.5 for 2 years. Embryos in year 1 were from oocytes developed in the field whereas embryos in year 2 were from oocytes developed under acidified conditions. Datasets associated with this study include Brooding Duration, Carbonate Chemistry, Embryo Morphology, and Embryo Stages. Embryo stages assessed monthly included detailed developmental stages from the prefuniculus formation through the prehatching stage. Embryo stages were not different among pH treatments. Embryo morphology included egg area, egg diameter, yolk area, yolk diameter, embryo area, eye area, and eye diameter. Each morphological characteristic varied according to pH treatment using a principal component analysis. |
Purpose: |
The purpose of the embryo experiments was to provide embryo morphology and the stage data and information on progression through stages associated with the three treatments throughout embryological development. |

Data Quality
Accuracy: |
The accuracy of the embryo stage data is 100% due to consistency during stage specific measurement from experienced scientists with replicate readings when appropriate. In addition, the frequency of observations was high during the experiment to ensure that the temporal changes were captured. The accuracy of the embryo morphology data is high (less than 1% difference from actual) due to consistency during morphological measurement from experienced scientists with replicate readings when appropriate. In addition, the frequency of observations was high during the experiment to ensure that the temporal changes were captured. |

Completeness Report: |
Embryo stage and morphometric data are complete (i.e. not filtered). |
Conceptual Consistency: |
Embryo stage and morphometric information were broadly compared to previous studies on Tanner crab and to similar measurements made on similar crab species. No quantitative assessments of consistency were made. For example, for comparing we used the study described in Mathis, Jeremy T., Jessica N. Cross, and Nicholas R. Bates. "Coupling primary production and terrestrial runoff to ocean acidification and carbonate mineral suppression in the eastern Bering Sea." Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans (19782012) 116.C2 (2011). |
