Item Identification

Title: Texas Fishery Dependent Sampling Program
Short Name: Texas Fishery Dependent Programs
Status: In Work
Purpose:

Over 2 million marine finfish are harvested annually by Texas coastal anglers and over 40 million pounds of seafood with an ex-vessel value of over 120 million dollars is harvested annually by commercial fishermen.. To insure that these resources are not depleted, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department monitors the harvest of aquatic resources to determine relationships between demand, prior abundance, weather and subsequent harvest. These data, along with independent sampling of finfish and shellfish populations and appropriate analyses permit logical management prodedures to be developed for the continued conservation of these species.

Supplemental Information:

Recreational harvest is monitored through surveys conducted at boat access sites along the Texas coast and commercial harvest is monitored through trip tickets. Areas of specific or limited scope are studied through the use of special projects or studies.
