Title: Monk Seal Ecosystem Model Output Data for System Understanding

Abstract:

By simulating different perturbations (scenarios) we assessed if the ecosystem was controlled by bottom-up, top-down or 'waist' forces. We ran a "base" model for French Frigate Shoals and Laysan with all vulnerabilities set to 2 (mixed impact) for 40 years and compared the mean of the last 5 years of model outcomes for each of the five scenarios tested.

Purpose:

To assess if the ecosystem was mainly controlled by bottom-up forces we decreased and increased the primary producers with 10%. Model output data are in the following csv files:

0.9xPrimaryProducers.csv - which shows the simulation of a 10% decrease in primary producers; and

1.1xPrimaryProducers.csv - which shows the simulation of a 10% increase in primary producers.

To assess if the ecosystem is mostly controlled by top-down forces we decreased the biomass of apex predators (sea birds, sharks, jacks, subphotic piscivores). Model output data are in 30percent_DecreasePredatorBiomass.csv

To assess if the ecosystem is mostly controlled by mid-trophic level dynamics, we increased and decreased the prey abundance for monk seals by 30%. Model output data are in the following csv files:

30percent_DecreasePrey-Meso_BC_PK_FF.csv - which shows the simulation of a 30% decrease in the prey species mesophotic benthic carnivores, mesophotic planktivores and forage fish; and

30percent_DecreasePrey-Meso_BC_PK_FF_BB.csv - which shows the simulation of a 30% decrease in the prey species mesophotic benthic carnivores, mesophotic planktivores, forage fish and bottomfish.

The last 5 years of the simulation of each of the above mentioned scenarios was compared to a base model where we had no additional forcings: Base.csv
