Summary

Abstract

Natural abundance levels of N and C isotopes measured in riparian plants, saltmarsh plants, suspended particulate organic matter, marine alga and Pacific Oysters in the Samish, Dosewallips, and Hamma River estuaries. Objective was to quantify the relative contribution of terrestrial, estuarine and marine C and N supporting commercial oyster populations and how this relationship varied across three river basins.

Data Attribute / Type Description
Watershed
VARCHAR2
Catchment where samples were collected. These were commercial beds located in estuaries near the confluence of each river basin. River and riparian samples collected upstream of estuary in river dominated habitat.
Site
VARCHAR2
Where samples were collected within the catchment: oyster bed, river, saltmarsh ecosystem types.
Date_Collected
DATE
Date samples were collected.
Date_Submitted
DATE
Date samples were sent to the laboratory.
Species
VARCHAR2
Species or sample type.
Replicate
NUMBER
Replicate within species or sample type. Units for values are count.
Delta C
NUMBER
The concentration in per mil (parts per thousands) of C13 in each sample. Studies examining stable isotopes at or near natural abundance levels are usually reported as delta, a value given in parts per thousand or per mil ("o/oo"). Delta values are not absolute isotope abundances but differences between sample readings and one or another of the widely used natural abundance standards which are considered delta = zero (e.g. air for N, At%15N = 0.3663033; Pee Dee Belemnite for C, At%13C = 1.1112328). Isotope samples with no value and "." are samples with concentrations beyond the standard values so could not be determining. Units for values are per mil or parts per thousand.
Delta N
NUMBER
The concentration in per mil (parts per thousands) of N15 in each sample. See above for more detail. Units for values are per mil or parts per thousand.
C Percent
NUMBER
The concentration percent of carbon (C) in each sample. Units for values are percentage (%).
N Percent
NUMBER
The concentration percent of nitrogen (N) in each sample. Units for values are percentage (%).
C:N
NUMBER
Ratio of percent C to N.
Length
NUMBER
Length of oyster in millimeter but caution should be taken with these data as they include fouling organisms that could not be removed. Units for values are millimeter.
Lat
NUMBER
Geospatial coordinates of sample location. Units for values are spatial coordinate.
Long
NUMBER
Geospatial coordinates of sample location. Units for values are spatial coordinate.
Weight
NUMBER
Weight of oyster in grams but caution should be taken with these data as they include fouling organisms that could not be removed. Units for values are grams.
Tissue_Type
VARCHAR2
Oyster tissue sampled for analysis.
Ploidy
VARCHAR2
Number of genetic chromosomes but ploidy should be used with caution because we assigned them based on their location in the oyster bed.
