Abstract:

This interactive map has many features designed to provide a quick and easy way to find a Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) station. It can be used to view and download data from real-time observations, historical observations, and predictions of tides and tidal currents.

Purpose:

The mission of the National Ocean Service, Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) is to provide the national infrastructure, and the scientific and technical expertise to monitor, assess, and distribute tide, water level, tidal current, meteorological and other coastal oceanographic products and services necessary to support NOAA's mission.

Supplemental Information:

Map displays locations of stations. Zooming in and clicking a specific station opens a pop-up dashboard, allowing access to the available datasets of interest of varying date ranges (sensor-dependent) as far back as the 1800s.

Entity Attribute Overview:

CO-OPS environmental monitoring stations collect data for both coastal and Great Lakes locations using varying sensor types (However, note that not all monitoring stations collect data using all sensor types). This map also has access to water level station datums, benchmarks, harmonic constants and sea level trends, and all stations related to our various Forecast Guidance models (Operational Forecast Systems).

- Water level sensors measure the instantaneous height of the water relative to a specified reference point. This includes the air acoustic measurement device, Microwave RADAR, shaft angle encoders, or pressure sensors. These data are also used for generating tide predictions at coastal locations.

- Air Temperature gauges measure how hot or cold the air is.

- Water Temperature gauges measure how hot or cold the water is.

- Conductivity Sensors measure the ability of water molecules to pass an electrical current

- Wind Measurement Sensor measures wind speed, direction and wind gusts.

- Barometric Pressure Sensors measure the weight of the column of atmosphere above the sensor (point-measurement).

- Relative Humidity Sensors measure the amount of water vapor present in air expressed as a percentage of the amount needed for saturation at the same temperature.

- Estuarine and Tidal Currents Sensors collect, analyze, and distribute observations and predictions of horizontal movement of water.

- Air Gap Sensors measure the vertical distance between the surface of a navigable waterway and a hazard above it such as a bridge. It is a time-varying quantity because the clearance distance is due to all processes that change the position of either the surface or the hazard. "Waterway surface" means the upper boundary of any body of navigable water.

- Visibility Sensors optically observe a point-measurement of the clarity of the atmosphere at that location.
