Abstract

This dataset contains a unified GeoTiff with 3x3 meter cell size representing the backscatter (intensity) of several deep coral priority areas off the Atlantic Coast of Florida, derived from data collected from the Lost Coast Explorer in October 2010. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Branch, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Ron Brown, as well as federal, university, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data off the Atlantic Coast of Florida from 10/26/2010 to 10/27/2010. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Kongsberg EM 710 multibeam echosounder (70 kHz). It was processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS software. Attitude and sound velocity correctors applied to the data. Verified tides were not applied to the data, leaving the depth values referenced to the ellipsoid. The imagery is projected in the UTM Zone 17 north, NAD83 datum. The backscatter component of the bathymetry data were geometrically and radiometrically corrected using Geocoder 3.x software. Acoustic backscatter mosaics are ostensibly an important piece of information when characterizing surficial seafloor features and delineating benthic habitats.

Acoustic backscatter mosaics are ostensibly an important piece of information when characterizing surficial seafloor features and delineating benthic habitats.

Purpose:

This multibeam data was collected as part of a mulitagency cooperative deep-sea coral investigation aboard the Lost Coast Explorer. The multibeam component of the cruise was intended to both provide fine scale acoustic imagery of known deep coral sites, as well as serve as an exploratory tool for identifying potential new habitat areas.

Data Quality

Completeness Report:

This GeoTiff is sourced from a CARIS gridded dataset. The original full-resolution multibeam data was used to create a downsampled uniform-resolution CARIS BASE (Bathymetry Associated with Statistical Error) surface grid with a best depth component. The downsampled grid nodes from that depth surface were then exported and used to generate the ESRI Grid. Some positional shifts may have occurred between the original data points and the transformed grid.

Conceptual Consistency:

Even though the survey was conducted to meet IHO standards, all users should independently analyze the dataset according to their own needs and standards to determine data usability.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 599381
Description:

For this project, data was collected aboard the Lost Coast Explorer from 10/26/2010 to 10/27/2010. Multibeam data were acquired in .all format with a hull-mounted Kongsberg EM 710 ER multibeam echosounder (70 kHz). Backscatter snippet collection was enabled. Line spacing for acquisition was three times the water depth, and data was retained out to 60 degrees from nadir. Heave, roll, pitch and heading correctors were collected using an Applanix POS/MV Model 320 V4 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and associated Trimble GPS antennas. Sound velocity profiles were acquired with a Seabird Electronics SeaCat SBE19P CTD profiler and processed using NOAA's Velocwin V8.85 software, then applied directly to the raw data. Positioning was obtained using Trimble Zephyr GPS receivers.

Source: Raw Multibeam Data

Process Step 2

CC ID: 599382
Description:

Raw .all data were converted and processed using CARIS HIPS and Sips 7.0 software, resulting in a CARIS HDCS format dataset with all correctors applied. Attitude and SWMB data was cleaned of fliers, and SWMB data was reviewed in subset mode by a NOAA contractor.

Process Date/Time: 2011-01-01 00:00:00
Source: HDCS Processed Multibeam Data

Process Step 3

CC ID: 599383
Description:

Acoustic backscatter mosaics are ostensibly an important piece of information when characterizing surficial seafloor features and delineating benthic habitats. The multibeam backscatter data were corrected for geometric and radiometric distortions using Geocoder 3.x. In particular, the following corrections were applied where appropriate and when artifacts were evident: AVG Trend, TX Power and RX Gain, Area Correction, Spreading, Slant-Range and Extracted Beam Pattern. As no theoretical beam pattern for the Kongsberg Em710 system exists, it was extracted from a mapped area that was flat and had a relatively uniform (sandy) substrate. Individual lines were also truncated based on ping number and/or angle of incidence where appropriate. The final mosaics were exported as geotiffs, ASCII and XYB files (i.e., X,Y locations in NAD 1983 UTM Zone 17N and Backscatter values as measured in decibels dBs).

Process Date/Time: 2011-01-01 00:00:00
Source: CARIS BASE Surface

Process Step 4

CC ID: 599384
Description:

A GeoTIFF of source bathymetry was input into the Slope calculator tool, a component of the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension. The output grid of calculated slope, with units in degrees, was created with vertical exaggeration z=1 and with the same grid resolution as the source bathymetry.
