Abstract

This dataset contains a GeoTIFF with .75x.75 meter cell size representing the backscatter or intensity of sound returned from the seafloor in "El Seco" east of Vieques Island, Puerto Rico. This intensity surface was derived from data collected in March and April 2009. Acoustic backscatter mosaics are an important piece of information when characterizing surficial seafloor features and delineating benthic habitats. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Branch, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam data around Vieques Island from 3/26/09 to 4/2/09. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad EM 1002 multibeam echosounder (95 kHz) for water depths greater than 75 meters, and with a moon pool flange-mounted Reson 7125 multibeam echosounder (dual frequecy, 200/400 kHz) for water depths of less than 75 meters. The backscatter component of the multibeam data were geometrically and radiometrically corrected using Fledermaus Geocoder Toolbox (FMGT) software. The project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependent on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.

Purpose:

This multibeam data was collected as IOCM (Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping) project NF-09-01 during the sixth year of an ongoing NOAA scientific research mission in the US Caribbean to characterize nearshore to deep water coral reef habitats at depths down to 1,000 meters. The mission purpose is to better understand the resources within the surveyed reef habitats, and ultimately develop species utilization models linking physical habitats with biological information. The multibeam backscatter, multibeam bathymetry, and ground truth video footage collected during the 2004-2009 missions will be used to create maps of seafloor habitats, helping NOAA meet its mapping commitment to the US Coral Reef Task Force. The resulting publicly-distributed data is also a contribution to the greater scientific community interested in the USVI seafloor.

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

See Data Acquisition and Processing Report (DAPR) for NF-09-01.

Vertical Positional Accuracy:

See Data Acquisition and Processing Report (DAPR) for NF-09-01.

Completeness Report:

The bathymetry raster is sourced from a CARIS gridded dataset. The original full-resolution multibeam data was used to create a downsampled uniform-resolution CARIS BASE (Bathymetry Associated with Statistical Error) surface grid with a best depth component. The downsampled grid nodes from that depth surface were then exported and used to generate the ESRI Geotiff. Some positional shifts may have occurred between the original data points and the transformed grid.

Conceptual Consistency:

While the project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on project area and depth, all users should independently analyze the dataset according to their own needs and standards to determine data usability.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 599933
Description:

For this project, the Chief Scientist was NOAA/NOS/NCCOS/CCMA's Tim Battista and the Lead Hydrographer was independent contractor Mike Stecher. Data was collected aboard the NOAA ship Nancy Foster from 3/26/09 to 4/2/09. Multibeam data were acquired in .all format with a hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad 1002 ER multibeam echosounder (95 kHz) for water depths greater than 75 meters and in .pds format with a moon pool flange-mounted Reson 7125 multibeam echosounder (dual frequecy, 200/400 kHz) for water depths of less than 75 meters. Backscatter snippet collection was enabled. Line spacing for acquisition was three times the water depth, and data was retained out to 60 degrees from nadir for the EM1002, and 128 degrees from nadir for the Reson 7125, depending on project area. Heave, roll, pitch and heading correctors were collected using an Applanix POS/MV Model 320 V4 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and associated Trimble GPS antennas. Sound velocity profiles were acquired with a Seabird Electronics SeaCat SBE19P CTD profiler and a Reson SVP 70 and processed using NOAA's Velocwin V8.85 software, then applied directly to the raw data. Positioning was obtained using Trimble Zephyr GPS receivers and an auxiliary Trimble DSM 132 DGPS with differential correctors from U.S. Coast Guard CORS beacon Isabel, Puerto Rico. Data was reduced to Mean Lower-Low Water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS, based on National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON). | Source Produced: Raw Multibeam Data NF-09-01

Process Date/Time: 2009-01-01 00:00:00
Source: Raw Multibeam Data NF-09-01

Process Step 2

CC ID: 599934
Description:

Raw .pds and .all data were converted and processed using CARIS HIPS v6.0 software, resulting in a CARIS HDCS format dataset with all correctors applied. Attitude and SWMB data was cleaned of fliers, and SWMB data was reviewed in subset mode by a NOAA contractor. | Source Produced: NF-09-01 HDCS Processed Multibeam Data

Process Date/Time: 2009-01-01 00:00:00
Source: Raw Multibeam Data NF-09-01

Process Step 3

CC ID: 599935
Description:

The multibeam backscatter data were corrected for geometric and radiometric distortions using Fledermaus Geocoder Toolbox (FMGT). The original .pds lines were first converted to paired .gsf and .s7k files using a custom script developed by Fledermaus. Next, the following corrections were applied in FMGT where appropriate and when artifacts were evident: AVG Trend, TX Power and RX Gain, Area Correction, Spreading, Local Seafloor Slope and Extracted Beam Pattern. Individual lines were also truncated based on ping number and/or angle of incidence where appropriate. The final mosaic was exported as a 0.75 x 0.75 m GeoTIFF with relative 8 bit values in WGS 1984 UTM Zone 20N. | Source Produced: Backscatter_ElSeco_75cm_Web.tif
