CC ID: 466564
Description:

METHODS:The following methods were used to calculate the mean depth (weighted by area) at which each internal wave occured in the SAR imagery. As ArcGIS 9.1 Spatial Analyst Zonal Stats function does not accomodate overlapping polygons, we first converted the bathymetric raster to a vector polygon shapefile. This bathymetric vector polygon was then intersected with the internal wave packet polygon shapefile. The next step was to calculate the mean depth (weighted by area) for each internal wave packet. To do so, we used the following equation:Area Weighted Mean (for depth) by internal wave packet =[((depth 1 x area 1) + (depth 2 x area 2) + (depth n-1 x area n-1)) /(area 1 + area 2 + area n-1)]Total area of the internal wave packet = area 1 + area 2 + area n-1After the mean depth (weighted by area) was calculated for each internal wave packet, the mean depth (weighted by area) was calculated for ALL internal waves. The same formula was used as above:Area Weighted Mean (for depth) =[((mean depth 1 x internal wave packet area 1) + (mean depth 2 x internal wave packet area 2) + (mean depth n-1 x internal wave area n-1)) / (internal wave packet area 1 + internal wave packet area 2 + internal wave packet area n-1)]
