CC ID: 466589
Description:

METHODS: The following methods were used to calculate the mean slope (weighted by area) at which each internal wave occured in the SAR imagery. The first step was to derive a slope surface (in degrees) from the bathymetry. We used the ArcGIS 9.1 Spatial Analyst extension slope function to create this surface. Before this slope surface could be converted to a vector polygon (because the Spatial Analyst Zonal Stats function does not accomodate overlapping polygons), it was multiplied by 100 million using the raster calculator and then converted to an integer raster. This factor of 100 million preserved the decimals in the floating point raster when it was converted to a integer raster. The slope integer raster was subsequently converted to a vector polygon, intersected with the internal wave packet polygon shapefile and the slope values were divided by 100 million to remove the scaling factor used previously. The next step was to calculate the mean slope (weighted by area) for each internal wave packet. To do so, we used the following equation:Area Weighted Mean (for slope) by internal wave packet =[((slope 1 x area 1) + (slope 2 x area 2) + (slope n-1 x area n-1)) /(area 1 + area 2 + area n-1)] Total area of the internal wave packet = area 1 + area 2 + area n-1 After the mean slope (weighted by area) was calculated for each internal wave packet, the mean slope (weighted by area) was calculated for ALL internal waves. The same formula was used as above: Area Weighted Mean (for slope)=[((mean slope 1 x internal wave packet area 1) + (mean slope 2 x internal wave packet area 2) + (mean slope n-1 x internal wave area n-1)) / (internal wave packet area 1 + internal wave packet area 2 + internal wave packet area n-1)]
