Title: Massachusetts Bay - Internal Wave Packets Digitized from SAR Imagery and Intersected with Tidal Zones
Short Name: iw_intersect_tidezones
Status: Completed
Publication Date: 2006
Abstract:

This feature class contains internal wave packets digitized from SAR imagery and intersected with tidal zones for Massachusetts Bay. The internal wave packets were digitized at a 1:350,000 scale and the tidal zones were created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Coastal Survey.

Purpose:

Created to support the biogeographic assessment of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 466615
Description:

METHODS:Internal wave packets often crossed into multiple tidal zones. In order to assign individual internal wave packets to a single tidal zone, the internal wave packet shapefile was intersected with the tidal zone shapefile. The resulting table was imported into JMP (a statistical software package) and each intersected polygon was sorted by: 1) the tidal zone in which it fell 2) the internal wave packet to which it belonged 3) its area (in square kilometers) Each internal wave packet was then assigned to the tidal zone that contained the majority of its area.
