Abstract

This classification of estimated depth represents the relative bathymetry of Puerto Rico's shallow waters based on Landsat imagery for NOAA's Coastal Centers for Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA). This data supports mapping and research activities of NOAA NOS. These data were created for the NOS Summit-to-Sea project. This project determines relationships between terrestrial and benthic change. The data were created using NOS developed algorithms. Bathymetry was derived from six Landsat images of different dates for Puerto Rico. The final bathymetry layer was derived from a per pixel median analysis of the 6 bathymetric layers. The results were verified using field collected depth supplied by NOAA. Depths are only reported within the shallow environment as determined by maximum penetration of band 1 (blue) of Landsat TM.

Process Step 1

Description:

Imported raw data AOI subsets into IMAGINE format from binary. Selected the best, least cloudy image sample for that path/row. We then ran a water reflectance formula (Bi-B4 or Bi-B5, where i= bands 1-3. This transform compensates for sun glint and water surface albedo) through IMAGINE. Once the water reflectance was available the log ratio method of bands 1 and 2 (m1*100*Log(B1-rdeepB1)/Log(B2-rdeepB2)-m0+0.5 where m1=slope and m0=shift) was applied by adjusting variables of slope and shift until the data reflected the field collected depths provided by NOS. Bathymetry estimations for different path/rows were then mosaicked to create a continuous layer for all of Puerto Rico, including Culebra and Vieques Islands.Process Date Range is 20031202 - 20040101
