In north-central and northwestern Puerto Rico is an area underlain mostly by Tertiary limestones, in which the topography is chiefly formed by solution (Monroe, 1976). This area comprises a physiographic province known as the karst belt. In this area, most of the drainage is underground except along the channels of those rivers that flow north across the belt from the mountains to the sea. Parts of two of the rivers mapped in this project, R\xEDo Camuy and R\xEDo Tanam\xE1 (a tributary of R\xEDo Grande de Arecibo), flow underground for part of their courses. Five additional rivers mapped, R\xEDo de la Plata, R\xEDo Cibuco (and its tributary R\xEDo Indio), R\xEDo Grande de Manat\xED, R\xEDo Guajataca, and R\xEDo Grande de Arecibo, also flow through the karst belt. Any river flowing across karst areas has the potential for losing a part of its flow to underground channels and caverns. Responders should be aware of the possibility of channel leakage and groundwater pollution during oil spills in these areas. | Description Source: Research Planning, Inc.
