Data Management Plan
DMP Template v2.0.1 (2015-01-01)
Please provide the following information, and submit to the NOAA DM Plan Repository.Reference to Master DM Plan (if applicable)
As stated in Section IV, Requirement 1.3, DM Plans may be hierarchical. If this DM Plan inherits provisions from a higher-level DM Plan already submitted to the Repository, then this more-specific Plan only needs to provide information that differs from what was provided in the Master DM Plan.
1. General Description of Data to be Managed
The Apalachicola Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and the NOAA Office for Coastal Management worked together to map benthic habitats within Apalachicola Bay, Florida. The bay and the lower portions of four distributaries were surveyed on 11-22 October 1999 using three benthic sampling techniques. This data set represents the information gathered from sediment profile imagery sampling. Images were collected at 436 stations throughout the bay.

4. Resources
Programs must identify resources within their own budget for managing the data they produce.
5. Data Lineage and Quality
NOAA has issued Information Quality Guidelines for ensuring and maximizing the quality, objectivity, utility, and integrity of information which it disseminates.

Process Steps:
- At 436 stations, a Hulcher sediment profile camera, fitted with a digital video camera to allow for real-time viewing of the sediment profiles, was deployed from one to four times. The profile camera was triggered from the boat while viewing images from the video camera; one to four profile images were taken on each deployment. In the softest sediments, the first image was taken within a second of bottom contact, when the camera had penetrated was 15 to 20 cm into the sediment. Subsequent film images were taken 10 to 30 seconds after the camera had reached the bottom. Film images were taken using Fujichrome 100P slide film. This combination of real-time video and surface triggering of the film camera insured that the sediment-water interface would be photographed before the prism window had passed the sediment-water interface. All sediment profile film images were analyzed visually by projecting the images and recording observed features into a standardized spreadsheet. Details of how these data were obtained can be found in Diaz and Schaffner (1988). All images were then digitized using a Nikon LS2000 scanner and analyzed using the Adobe PhotoShop and NTIS Image programs. Steps in the computer analysis of each image were standardized and followed the basic procedures in Viles and Diaz (1991). References: 1) Diaz, R.J., and L.C. Schaffner. 1988. 6. Data Documentation
The EDMC Data Documentation Procedural Directive requires that NOAA data be well documented, specifies the use of ISO 19115 and related standards for documentation of new data, and provides links to resources and tools for metadata creation and validation.

7. Data Access
NAO 212-15 states that access to environmental data may only be restricted when distribution is explicitly limited by law, regulation, policy (such as those applicable to personally identifiable information or protected critical infrastructure information or proprietary trade information) or by security requirements. The EDMC Data Access Procedural Directive contains specific guidance, recommends the use of open-standard, interoperable, non-proprietary web services, provides information about resources and tools to enable data access, and includes a Waiver to be submitted to justify any approach other than full, unrestricted public access.
