Abstract

These data were collected by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration National Geodetic Survey Remote Sensing Division using a Riegl VQ880G system. The data were acquired from 20140829 - 20140919. The data includes topobathy data in an LAS 1.2 format file classified as unclassified (1), ground (2), noise (7), water column (25), bathymetric point (26), topobathy water surface (27), submerged object (29), and International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) S-57 object (30) in accordance with the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) classification standards. This data set may also include lidar intensity values and encoded RGB image values.

Purpose:

This lidar data are an ancillary product of NOAA's Coastal Mapping Program (CMP), created through a wider Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping initiative to increase support for multiple uses of the data. It is not intended for mapping, charting, or navigation. In addition, it will be used for ongoing research efforts for testing and developing standards for airborne lidar.

Notes:

Supplemental Information:

Data include all lidar returns. Outliers or false returns (e.g., returns from birds, atmospheric particles, and/or system noise) may be present in the data. An automated ground classification algorithm was used to determine bare earth point classification. It should be noted that not all returns were correctly classified; therefore the user should examine for acceptability.

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

The data positions were obtained using post processed KGPS methods. The horizontal accuracy of the data is better than plus or minus 1.0 m.; Quantitative Value: 1.0 meters, Test that produced the value: 2 sigma. Calculated to 0.5 RMSE (2 sigma 1.0 / 1.96 = RMSE)

Vertical Positional Accuracy:

The data positions were obtained using post processed KGPS methods. The vertical accuracy of the data is better than plus or minus 0.15 m.; Quantitative Value: 0.08 meters, Test that produced the value: 2 sigma. Calculated to 0.04 RMSE (2 sigma 0.08 / 1.96 = RMSE)

Completeness Report:

Original data extents include 2,104 tiles (500m x 500m tiles). 2,096 tiles were kept for distribution through the Digital Coast as they only included classes which were removed (noise classes).

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1138130
Description:

Data were processed to an initial LAS format using the Riegl RiProcess software. The Applanix POSPac software was utilized for GPS and inertial processing, and GeoCue, Terrasolid, and LP360 software for data visualization, 3D editing, and export to final LAS file. Data were processed in NAD83 horizontal and vertical datum.

Process Date/Time: 2016-07-13 00:00:00

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1138131
Description:

Lidar data were received from NOAA NGS by NOAA OCM in LAS 1.2 format. Duplicate points were removed on a tile by tile basis using lasduplicate. Data were transformed from UTM zone 19 to geographic coordinates. The files were compressed to LAZ format with laszip and ingested into the Digital Coast Data Access Viewer system for distribution. 1921 tiles were delivered but 734 tiles had only unclassified and noise points over open ocean, therefore the decision was made to exclude these from the publicly available data thought these are available upon request. Also, 1 tile was removed because there were no points at all.
