Title: 2008 NOAA/NGS Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping (IOCM) LIDAR: Kenai Peninsula Alaska
Short Name: ngs2008_ak_m108_metadata
Status: Completed
Publication Date: 2008-10-15
Abstract:

These data were collected by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration National Geodetic Survey

Remote Sensing Division using an OPTECH ALTM system. The data includes topographic data in an LAS format file.

The data was collected 31 July - 1 August 2008 on the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. It has been processed to bare

earth using only an automated routine - additional manual editing is required for localized use. The data covers

portions of the Outer and Inner Kachemak Bay coastline from Point Anchor to Homer and along the coast into the head

of the bay. The data falls in the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and includes the Fox River

Flats Critical Habitat Areas.

Purpose:

This lidar was acquired by the NOAA Remote Sensing Division to support NOAA's IOCM initiative. It is not intended

for mapping, charting or navigation. In addition, it will be used for ongoing research efforts for testing and

developing standards for airborne lidar.

Supplemental Information:

Data include all lidar returns (first, second, third, and last) and have been

classified to bare earth by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) using only automated processes. "Outliers" or

"false returns" (e.g., returns from birds, atmospheric particles, and/or system noise) may be present in the data.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1132471
Description:

Data were processed to an initial LAS format using the ALTM DASHMAP software.

The Applanix POSPac software was utilized for GPS and inertial processing, and Terrasolid software for

data visualization, 3D editing and export to final LAS file. Data were processed in NAD83 horizontal and

vertical datum.

Process Date/Time: 2008-10-06 00:00:00

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1132472
Description:

The NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) received files in LAS format. The files contained

LiDAR intensity and elevation measurements. OCM performed the following processing on the data to make it available

within Digital Coast:

1. The data were converted from UTM coordinates to geographic coordinates.

2. The LAS header fields were sorted by latitude and updated.

3. The data was filtered to eliminate outliers.
