| Abstract: |
The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' (BGN) database of geographic feature names. The database is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the BGN. Geographic coordinates are approximate and are intended for general location. Place name information is based on the Geographic Names Data Base, containing official standard names approved by the United States Board on Geographic Names and maintained by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The geographic names in this database are provided for the guidance of and use by the Federal Government and for the information of the general public. The names, variants, and associated data may not reflect the views of the United States Government on the sovereignty over geographic features. |

To support coastal and ocean planning and other activities pursuant to the Energy Policy Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Rivers and Harbors Act and the Submerged Lands Act. |

+ Go to: http://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/ + Click Export in left pane + In main frame select all countries at top, fill in the Export File Name and validate + Within Feature Designations sections select all for Undersea + Within Export File Format section select file type to download (shapefile) + Click search database and when prompted click Download File + Project data into WGS 1984 Auxiliary Sphere + Select all features where NT field = 'N' and export into a new feature class (approved BGN names) + Select all features where DSG field = 'UFHU' and delete (historical undersea features) + Delete features with empty geometry + Run the Intersect tool and find all features that overlap + Delete the oldest features in the pairs of overlapping features + Run the Find Identical tool and find all features with matching SORT_NAME + Delete the oldest features for those with identical SORT_NAME + Create new field designation and calculate based on designation code: http://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/lookup.aspx?PAGE=DESIG&CD=&NAME=&SB1=3&SB2=3&FC= + Delete superfluous fields |
