Item Identification

Title: AIS Vessel Density 2013
Short Name: VesselDensity2013
Status: Completed
Publication Date: 2015-12-09
Abstract:

Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) are a navigation safety device that transmits and monitors the location and characteristics of many vessels in U.S. and international waters in real-time. This dataset represents the density of vessel traffic in 2013 for the contiguous United States offshore waters from vessels with AIS transponders in 100 meter grid cells. The dataset is best interpreted using a high to low density scale and does not represent actual vessel counts.

Purpose:

To support coastal and ocean planning and other activities pursuant to the Energy Policy Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Rivers and Harbors Act and the Submerged Lands Act.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 654487
Description:

1. Project all East Coast, West Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Great Lakes density rasters to NAD83, as necessary.

2. Use Mosaic to Raster tool to combine each regional raster per vessel type into a national vessel type mosaic. Determine priority for areas of overlap, as applicable.

3. Use Extract by Attributes tool to remove all negative from mosaic, as applicable.

4. Project mosaic to Web Mercator.
