Abstract

These data are LiDAR orthorectified aerial photographs (8-bit GeoTIFF format) within the Oregon Lidar Consortium Sandy River project area. The imagery coverage is extended a minimum of beyond the project AOI. A GSD (Ground Sample Distance) resolution of 3 inch was used for each four-band color pixel. QSI recommends viewing the orthoimagery in ESRI ArcMap software using a raster catalog. For best results, stretch type should be set to 'None' and Gamma Stretch should not be applied (Layer Properties -> Symbology Tab). The circuit is projected in OGIC. Units are in International feet.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

To assess the spatial accuracy of the orthophotographs, they were compared against check points identified from the LiDAR intensity images. The checkpoints were distributed evenly across the total acquired area, and were measured on surface features such as painted road lines and fixed high-contrast objects on the ground surface. Horizontal accuracy applies only to the portion of the swath that was orthorectified to the LiDAR-derived DEM. Outside of that, accuracy and radiometry at ortho seams are not guaranteed. The accuracy of the final mosaic was calculated in relation to the LiDAR-derived control points. The orthophoto horizontal accuracy is reported as the root-mean-square error (RMSE). For this data set, the RMSE is 21 cm.

Description:

The aerial imagery was acquired with the NIR and topobathymetric LiDAR using a Leica RCD105 39-megapixel digital camera. Images were collected in 3 spectral bands (red, green, and blue) with 60% along track overlap and 30% side-lap between frames. The acquisition flight parameters were designed to yield a native pixel resolution of 7.0 centimeters. The resulting spatial accuracies (RMSE) were routinely less than or equal to 21.0 centimeters at 95% confidence level.

The collected digital photographs went through multiple processing steps to create final orthophoto products. Image radiometric values were calibrated to specific gain and exposure settings, and photo position and orientation were calculated by linking the time of image capture to the smoothed best estimate of trajectory (SBET). Within Leica Photogrammetry Suite (LPS), the exterior orientation derived from the SBET was applied to the photo images and the interior orientation of the camera was defined. Adjusted images were orthorectified using the LiDAR-derived ground model to remove displacement effects from topographic relief inherent in the imagery and individual orthorectified TIFFs were blended together to remove seams. The final mosaics were corrected for any remaining radiometric differences between images using Inpho's OrthoVista.
